A Family Day Out in Santa Monica

Family building a sandcastle with bright buckets on Santa Monica beach

Santa Monica has two miles of golden sand, a gentle slope into the water and everything you need within a short walk of the Ocean Front Walk. Here is how we would spend a full day with the family.

Morning: sandcastles and sea air

Arrive early, park along the seafront and set up before the beach fills. The sand nearest the Ocean Front Walk holds its shape beautifully for castles and moats — bring a bucket and spade, or grab one from us on the way past.

Late morning: crabbing

Head towards the harbour side with a crabbing line and bucket. It costs almost nothing, keeps children happy for hours and always ends with a triumphant photo. Remember to release your catch gently back into the water.

Afternoon: games and inflatables

Beach bats, footballs, frisbees, rings and inflatables all come out once the tide is right. Water shoes are worth having if anyone in your group dislikes shingle underfoot.

Teatime: ice cream, obviously

Finish at the shop for local California farm cream ice cream, a Mr Whippy or a slush drink. Pocket money toys, rock and fudge are all by the door if there is a souvenir to be chosen before you head home.
